Since COVID-19 struck the world, more and more of us have been advised by our governments about working from home and how doing so can improve our chances at stopping the spread of the virus.

This post will explain the different manners in which even the way we sit can affect us whilst sitting at home for so long.

Think of your posture

The NHS website claims that back support is one of the most important stages to consider when thinking about your sitting posture. Although we may dedicate this post to being aimed at sitting and working at home this tip in particular can be used when sitting anywhere! Your lower back must be support if you are considering sitting down for any long periods of time when working from home. A pillow should be first thought of when aiming to support the lower back as it provides not only comfort as a material but is a brilliant shape to support general lower back structure.  

Generally resting feet on the floor is always a good next step when setting the stage for solid working posture. Crossing legs, although comfortable to some, is considered by the British NHS to be one of the main contributors to poor posture which in turn can relate to further medical issues down the line. 

Having the keyboard straight in front of you rather than to the side or too far ahead can also relate to poor posture. Having arms bent in an L-shape and your elbows by your side you can not only increase relaxation but also give support to the whole body that doesn’t provoke slouching. Wrist rests, although not strictly necessary, can be a great guide to how to hold your arms while typing and using the mouse for long durations. 

Making objects easier to reach for yourself sounds like a standard idea but in practice it can make a huge difference in combating strain. Strain is not often a common issue associated with the work place but in reality, it is a minor start for major problems. 

For your eyes sake!

The eyes are a major weak point for a lot of office/admin workers especially since they have moved from a designated office space (which already considers eye level) to a more relaxed environment at home. Sitting at eye level with a monitor is crucial for not only posture but also for neck strain. Adjusting a chair by lifting the mechanism up and down or by using pillows to stack yourself to eye level can severely reduce strain and generally increase your posture. 

Taking regular breaks from a monitor screen may seem unproductive but it is highly necessary especially since more and more of us are now home bound in a relaxed environment. Even the classic 20-20-20 rule which states that for every 20 minutes spent staring at a monitor screen you should be looking away at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
